The UK Government has re-introduced the Tobacco and Vapes Bill to phase out smoking, restrict youth access to vaping, and expand smoke-free areas.
The Tobacco & Vapes Bill will:
- Phase out the sale of tobacco products across the UK to anyone aged 15 or younger this year
- Provide powers to extend the indoor smoking ban to specific outdoor spaces: with children’s playgrounds, outside schools and hospitals all being considered, subject to consultation.
- Ban vape advertising and sponsorship, as well restrict vape flavours, display and packaging of all types of vapes, as well as other nicotine products.
RCPCH will work closely with parliamentarians and stakeholders in the charity and medical sector, including in coalition with ASH England, to ensure this Bill successfully progresses through parliament over the coming months. As we do this, we will seek to update members on our plans.
RCPCH President, Professor Steve Turner, said:
We are pleased to see the UK continue to lead the world on tobacco reform. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill will provide us with a once in a generation opportunity to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our children and future society. RCPCH stands ready to support this groundbreaking legislation.
