RCPCH calls on MPs to support Tobacco and Vapes Bill

RCPCH is urging MPs to support the Tobacco and Vapes Bill as debate set to begin on the government's legislative proposals in the House of Commons.

The  of the Bill takes place on 16 March 2024 and is the first opportunity that MPs have to debate the general principles of the government’s Bill. It aims to create a smokefree generation by 2030 and also includes measures that would strengthen regulations around the sale of vapes. 

Ahead of this, the led by Action of Smoking and Health (ASH) explaining why this legislation is needed, wanted, and workable. The College has also made clear the importance of the Bill for  alongside the National Children’s Bureau (NCB) and other leading children’s and health organisations.  

The College will continue to work closely with other organisations as the Bill makes its passage through parliament. 

In response, Professor Steve Turner, RCPCH President said:

Without a doubt the introduction of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill will save lives. By stopping children and young people from becoming addicted to nicotine and tobacco we decrease their chances of developing preventable diseases later in life, and will protect children from the harms of nicotine addiction. As paediatricians, we strongly urge MPs to use the important responsibility they have and support this Bill to protect children’s and our nation’s current and future health.
