RCPCH respond to National Child Mortality Database’s ‘Child deaths due to Asthma or Anaphylaxis’ Report

The national database’s ‘Child deaths due to Asthma or Anaphylaxis’ report aims to identify trends in child mortality due to asthma and anaphylaxis, investigate factors associated with these deaths and identify common themes.

This year’s data shows:

  • Between March 2019 and March 2023, 54 children and young people in the UK died from asthma.
  • The death rate was four times higher for children from more deprived areas.
  • 65% attended an emergency department or had an emergency admission in the year before their death.

RCPCH President, Professor Steve Turner, said:

It is tragic to read that between March 2019 and March 2023, 54 children and young people in the UK died from asthma. Asthma is the most common long-term condition among children and young people and is one of the top ten reasons for emergency hospital admission in the UK.

There is no cure for asthma, and whilst we have very effective preventers and relievers, some of these are not having an effect on some children. The NCMD report highlights that asthma mortality was four times higher in children in more deprived communities, further highlighting the fact that families living with deprivation are known to struggle to engage and navigate through the NHS.

The healthcare system needs to shift towards a more patient-centred, community-based service to better support children with asthma. Children and young people will benefit from proper diagnosis and treatment to ensure that they live happy and fulfilling lives.
