In preparing for our careers campaign, Russell notes that we must be clear about the challenges of a career in paediatrics, and focused on keeping it as the best career in medicine.

Feeling recharged from a summer holiday, Russell looks to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead, as the College is working hard to ensure the new UK Government prioritises child health.

Yesterday the Prime Minister pledged an additional one-off £1.8 billion for the NHS in England. Some of this funding is due to be allocated to children and young people's services but there remains a significant amount to do to help an NHS that is under serious pressure across the country.

Dr Nicola Jay, consultant paediatrician at Sheffield Children's Hospital, has been appointed as the new Officer for Workforce Planning and Health Services. She considers an example of a 'wicked problem' in paediatrics - the health workforce crisis in the UK - and how we can move forward.

Getting around the country (and away from the 'Westminster bubble') is one of Russell's top priorities, and gives him a chance to meet "some of the amazing paediatricians working across the UK".

This exciting new funding partnership will see dedicated investment of £263,000 for a real impact on the lives and health of children with disabilities across the UK.
