Workforce CCT survey 2025

What happens after paediatricians complete their specialist training, and how do they feel about the transition into a consultant role? On 8 April, we launched a survey of paediatricians who have obtained, or will obtain in the next 18-24 months, their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). This will give us an updated picture of the paediatric workforce at this stage.

Who should complete this survey, and how?

This survey is now open to two groups of RCPCH members:

  • current postgraduate doctors in training who plan to CCT within the next 18-24 months
  • doctors who have completed their CCT within the past five years.

On 8 April 2025, we emailed each member in one of the above groups and who are opted in to the 'survey' contact preference - according to our main contact database. This email will have a personal link to the survey on the platform, SurveyMonkey. The email is coming from the College Workforce team, with the subject line, 'Workforce CCT survey 2025'.

If you did not get this email by the end of 8 April and are in one of the above groups, please email us at workforce@rcpch.ac.uk. We will email you with a personal link to the survey. Please make sure to check your 'spam' inbox.

What information does the survey collect?

The surveys asks about:

  • your past or current training, including training length, location, pattern
  • for current postgraduate doctors in training (PGDiT) - your preparation for a consultant role, such as additional training and opportunities, whether there were changes in training subject and location and information about transitioning into a consultant role
  • for recently qualified consultants - your first role post-qualification, your experience of transition into a consultant or other role.

The survey is anonymous. We will not publish any identifiable information. Findings will be aggregated by region and other overall categories.

Although this survey is anonymous and no personal information will be collected on behalf of the College, Survey Monkey will collect some information from participants. When the survey closes, the Workforce team will delete any such information unrelated to survey findings, such as email and IP address. Why are are doing this work?

From 2011 until 2017 (published in 2019), we conducted yearly surveys of cohorts of paediatricians who had recently completed their specialist training, capturing information such as location, grade, number of hours worked. See our past CCT reports.

This project was paused in 2019 and it was then decided to resume it this year to retrieve information on newly qualified consultants in light of the rapid contextual changes that have characterised the past few years (Covid-19 pandemic; Progress+; less than full time and flexible working; general health sector pressures).

This survey of consultants qualified in the past five years and paediatricians approaching qualification will provide us with an up-to-date characterisation of the current workforce.

What happens next?

The survey will remain open for four weeks and a report with findings will be collated and available later this year.
