Dr Andrew Long, Senior Member and Fellow Representative

Andrew Long

Dr Andrew Long is currently RCPCH Representative for Senior Members, Senior Fellows and Honorary Fellows. He has been involved in the work of the College since 1999 when he was appointed as Assistant to the Registrar. He was involved in several roles within the Education and Training Division, including Assessment, Examinations, CPD and the International Paediatric Training Scheme. He was instrumental in the development of the START Assessment, becoming Vice-Chair of the START Board before taking up the role of RCPCH Vice President for Education & Professional Development which he held from 2013 to June 2018. He was Head of the London School of Paediatrics between 2009 and 2014.

Andrew was a consultant in general paediatrics for over 30 years. He commenced his consultant career in Bromley, South London in 1991; where he was also Director of Medical Education and Associate Medical Director; before moving to Great Ormond Street Hospital in 2011 to support the development of the new team of general paediatricians. He became Specialty Lead for the general paediatric team in 2013 and was appointed as Associate Medical Director for Professional Accountability, and Responsible Officer for GOSH in 2016 with a brief for managing revalidation and medical affairs. He was a Lead Assessor for the National Clinical Assessment Service.

Andrew has a long-standing interest in supporting doctors experiencing difficulty during their professional careers. In addition to his role at GOSH he was involved in establishing the Careers Unit at the London Deanery where he was trained as a mentor. He led a workstream on remediation for doctors in difficulty within the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and worked closely with the Professional Performance Advice Service and the GMC to support doctors through difficult times during their professional careers. He has a longstanding interest in mentoring and careers support and completed a Masters in Interprofessional Education in 2008. He continues to teach doctors in training, consultants and SASG doctors regularly on matters relating to medical education, training, leadership and supporting doctors in difficulty.

During his leisure time, Andrew enjoys singing, cycling, baking (not all at the same time!) and sharing some of the care of his seven grandchildren! He definitely finds heading out on a long bicycle ride less exhausting than looking after his pre-school grandchildren!

Andrew holds monthly get togethers for senior members over Zoom, as well as sending regular updates by email to those he represents. If you’re already a senior member or thinking about retirement, do get in touch.
