Announcing the winners of the 2019 examination prizes

These prizes recognise that trainees invest a significant amount of time in preparing for their examinations - and for UK trainees how important they are for their progression. Well done to all those completing exams, and congratulations to this year’s winners who are the highest scoring from last year's intake.

Lal Bagh Award

Helen Turner

Donated by Colonel Moorthy, this is an annual prize awarded to the candidate with the highest score in the MRCPCH clinical examination.

This year's Lal Bagh award winner is Dr Helen Turner.

Helen tells us:

"I am an ST4 trainee in the South East of Scotland, based in beautiful Edinburgh and the surrounding area. I enjoy the challenges and variety offered by general paediatrics, and the rewards of working with children and their families. I am very lucky to have worked within many enthusiastic and supportive teams during my training.

"I was also fortunate to be able to use a break from training to utilise my skills working for an NGO in Zambia, providing mobile healthcare to those living in rural areas.

"Outside of work I enjoying exploring the outdoors of Scotland and further afield, and spending time with family and friends. Receiving the Dr Lal Bagh award during lockdown was a huge surprise, and I am very grateful!"

Jisma Joseph Award

This is an annual prize awarded to the UK candidate with the highest score in the overall MRCPCH examination.

This year's Jisma Joseph Award winner is Dr Jodie Nguyen.

Jodie tells us:

Jodie Nguyen

"I studied in the University of Southampton before completing my foundation years in a London deanery. I have always enjoyed working with children, both inside and outside of medicine, so I naturally gravitated towards paediatrics. I am now part of the Kent, Surrey, and Sussex deanery.

"I love helping children and their families, I love how children never fail to make me smile, and I love how interesting paediatric medicine is. It is an honour to have received this award, but I wouldn’t have been able to achieve it without plenty of support and encouragement from family and friends, my paediatric mentors, and study buddies who have helped along the way.

"Outside paediatrics, I enjoy travelling, baking, and a new hobby since COVID-19 lockdown, yoga!"
