Kay is a Consultant Paediatric Nephrologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, and has worked as a paediatrician for 30 years. Kay has previously volunteered for RCPCH as our Assistant Officer for Recruitment, and previously sat on the Nephrology CSAC.
Incoming workforce officer, Dr Kay Tyerman said:
Workforce planning is absolutely essential. It is the link between ensuring high quality paediatric care for children and young people while also genuinely helping paediatricians to thrive in their roles, throughout their careers. When done well, workforce planning includes considering numbers yes, but also getting the right people together and skill mix, the right environment and the right innovations and technology in our care settings.
We have an opportunity now to look across the whole career journey of paediatricians from inspiring medical students in paediatrics to the latter stages of a lifelong career when clinicians inspire and mentor our paediatricians of the future.
I’d like to thank Nic Jay for her incredible work and advocacy on these key issues - she has set the bar extremely high. I am looking forward to using all my skills and experiences to take the reigns in this post, and working with members on next steps.

I am delighted to welcome Kay as Officer for Workforce Planning. This is a time of transition for the College as we further develop our approach to supporting the workforce, so this role has never been more important. The external world is also changing, as Physicians Associates and Advanced Clinical Practitioners roles become more cemented in the NHS, and as paediatricians’ requirements from their roles change. I am really pleased that Kay will be spearheading this work for the College – her knowledge and experience is extremely welcome.
Of course, I also want to give our outgoing officer, Nic Jay, our heartfelt thanks for her focus and dedication over the last few years. She leaves a strong legacy, and we are extremely grateful for all her work.
