This is the first update since 2013, and doctors will have five months to familiarise themselves with the document, before the new standards come into effect on 30 January 2024. Before this point the current 2013 version of the standards apply.
Paediatricians will already be familiar with the main principles, but the GMC has said the standards have been updated in five key areas to:
- promote patient centred care
- support continuity of care and safe delegation
- create respectful, fair and compassionate workplaces in healthcare
- tackle discrimination towards patients and colleagues
- champion fair and inclusive leadership
These standards will of course also apply to physicians associates and anaesthesia associates once they come under the GMC’s regulation.
The GMC has updated these standards following a period of consultation. You can read more about You can also see the RCPCH response to the consultation here.
There are a number of accompanying documents that the GMC is producing, and we are working to ensure children and young people are properly represented within these considerations.
