Immigration cap on doctors and nurses to be lifted

RCPCH President responds to the Government announcement by Home Secretary Sajid Javid that the immigration cap on doctors and nurses is to be lifted from today (Friday 15 June). This means that there will be no restriction on the numbers who can be employed in the NHS through the so-called tier 2 visa route.

Responding to the Government announcement that immigration rules for doctors will be relaxed, Professor Russell Viner, President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health said:

鈥淭his is welcome news for paediatricians across the UK. Lifting the tier 2 visa cap for doctors and nurses will allow highly skilled and experienced healthcare professionals to join the NHS at a time when our workforce is facing serious pressures. More resource is essential in ensuring that we can deliver safe and sustainable services for children and young people now and in the future.

"The recognition of these issues by Government is encouraging, and we eagerly await further detail on their long-term plan for the NHS in the coming weeks鈥.
