RCPCH responds to launch of Government consultation on promotions of unhealthy food and drink

As part of its childhood obesity plan, Government has launched a consultation on restricting promotions of food and drink that is high in fat, sugar and salt.

Commenting on the launch of consultation, Professor Russell Viner, President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said:

鈥淲e know that promotions influence our decisions on which products to buy. When unhealthy snacks are prominently placed at checkouts or on a 鈥渂uy-one-get-one-free鈥 offer, it can be all too easy to buy more than we need, consuming excess calories as a result. And we know children and young people who are overweight are more influenced by advertising. With one in three children leaving primary school with excess weight or obesity, it is clear that action is needed in this area. That鈥檚 why this consultation from Government is welcome, and we look forward to responding鈥.
