RCPCH responds to Welsh Government's children's mental health announcement

The Welsh Government has announced an additional £7.1m of additional funding to protect, improve and support the mental health of children and young people in Wales. Dr David Tuthill, RCPCH Officer for Wales responds.

The funding will build on previous investment of £1.4m which is being invested to improve child and adolescent mental health services and will also support the whole-school approach to improve mental health and wellbeing in schools. Health Minister Vaughan Gething made the announcement during a conference in Cardiff today.

In response to , linked to improving children and young people’s mental health, Dr David Tuthill, Officer for Wales for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), said:

Mental health problems can become a direct barrier to a child’s future health, education and employment prospects if they are left unaddressed, so the funding announcement made today is one we very much welcome.

While prevention and school-based support is something that is needed, we need to make sure that all children have equal access to services, no matter how they enter the system or where they live in Wales. The Government’s newly established Ministerial Group for mental health provides an excellent opportunity to address all of this and I look forward to working with them to ensure no child gets left behind.
