RCPCH welcomes fill rate of 97.4% for ST1 Paediatrics in England

We respond to news from Health Education England about a significant rise in the fill rate for ST1 paediatrics.

We are delighted to see a significant increase in recruitment fill rates for ST1 paediatrics, published by Health Education England, with an exceptional fill rate of 97.46% in England, representing a big rise from 82.82% and 81.80% in 2019 and 2018 respectively.

Simon Broughton, Officer for Recruitment said:

This is great news for Paediatrics and reflects the effort that the RCPCH has invested into recruitment, in particular the #ChoosePaediatrics campaign.  It also demonstrates that Paediatrics remains a popular career for many junior doctors.  We look forward to working with our new ST1 colleagues and welcoming them into Paediatrics.鈥

Dr David Evans, Vice President for Training and Assessment, said:

I would like to thank all those involved in recruitment; in particular the many current paediatric trainees, whose passion and enthusiasm for their career has obviously shone through. This is indeed welcome news, not only for those involved in training, but also for the wider child healthcare community, including children, young people and their families.

Update - 27 August 2020

Following on from the great news regarding the significant increase in recruitment fill rates for ST1 paediatrics in England, figures for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have also now been released.

We are very pleased to note that these numbers are also very positive, with all the devolved nations filling all but one of their ST1 posts for fill rates of 93.75%, 96.67% and 95.83% respectively. This represents a rise in fill rate for Northern Ireland and considerable rise in the number of posts filled in Wales, up from 14 in 2019 to 23 in 2020, while Scotland continue a trend for posting high fill rates.
