In response to the GMC's Training environment 2017 report, Dr David Evans, Vice President for Training and Assessment at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), said:
“Trainers are key to providing courses and resources to support education supervision, and this analysis further highlights the heavy workloads they face. For too many, there is simply not enough time to deliver the training they need to. It’s crucial that Trusts provide adequate time in job plans for trainers, which will in turn benefit the next generation of paediatriciansand indeed the health and health care of the infants, children and young people of the UK .
“The RCPCH has an important role in helping reduce bureaucracy and lighten the workload when it comes to assessments. Curriculum revisions to improve efficiency in evidencing achievements, newer assessments based around authentic professional activities rather than a competency-based tick box approach, and the emphasis on the importance of skills such as leadership and communications are all being introduced. We also support and facilitate the sharing of good practice through external visits and linking up training committees.
“Involving trainees in efforts to improve the quality of training – in particular through harnessing their enthusiasm and ability to innovate – is absolutely key to ensuring an effective and enjoyable training environment."
