Our guidance explains rota design and rostering best practice for specialty trainees and foundation doctors. It outlines what to expect from a working week, including time for education and training, provides examples of a work plan and explains the rostering process. It also includes details on minimal staffing levels, flexible working and different types of leave.
Available to download below, this comprehensive guidance spans the early stages of roster preparation and creation through to exception reporting and review. It is aimed at Postgraduate Doctors in Training (PGDiT), specifically Foundation Doctors and Specialty Trainees, but also has information relevant for doctors in equivalent non-training roles. It can be used by both PGDiT and managers as they move through the rostering process.
While the current guidance is focussed on England, it will be updated in due course to cover the whole of the UK.
The guidance is compiled from a number of sources including the BMA, and sits alongside our Trainee Toolkit and Thrive Paediatrics Roadmap for Transforming Working Lives of Paediatricians.
