This programme ran for five years until March 2023.
Our Impact report 2022 highlights the impact this programme had on paediatric diabetes units across England and Wales from 2018 to early 2023. Our Self-assessment report 2018-2022 evaluates the units' compliance against more than 150 measures.
What was the self assessment?
As part of the programme, participating PDUs completed an annual self assessment against the National Diabetes Quality Programme measures.
The NDQP Self Assessment measures (download below), agreed by the National Network with the support of NICE and NHS England, provide a set of indicators that supplement the National Paediatric Diabetes Audit’s (NPDA) picture of patient-level processes of care and outcomes. The measures include details of the structure and organisation of services at hospital and multidisciplinary team level to demonstrate improvement and identify service gaps where resources are required.
The collected data from the self assessment also help NHS Trusts in England to demonstrate compliance with the Paediatric Diabetes Best Practice Tariff Criteria. In Wales, the data helps towards continuing improvement work to benefit children with diabetes and their families.
Following feedback on the previous Diabetes Quality Improvement Network System (DQuINS) methodology, the self assessment platform was designed to be as simple to complete as possible. The submission phase consisted of updating a series of predominantly yes/no fields and details about team and Trust/Health Board composition. PDUs were trusted to have supporting evidence available rather than requiring extensive uploading for the submission.
Documentation was then thoroughly reviewed as part of the peer review and External Verification (EV) workstreams.
Data submission
The last submission was open from 1 June to 28 July 2022.
Data and comparison charts remain open on a read-only basis to support service development activities and inform peer review. Programme users can log in via the .
Documents to support evidence collation are available to download below:
- Self Assessment measures - include examples of documents which evidence compliance as required for peer review and to provide clarification on some elements following feedback
- Three templates to support the collation of evidence, which PDUs could optionally use to produce their core documents
- List of suggested evidence has also been produced.
