Public affairs - how we influence

Ensuring decision-makers introduce the best public policy for children and young people is an important part of our work at RCPCH. Find out more about our approach to influencing and how we do it.

Since RCPCH was founded, we have worked to establish ourselves as the authoritative voice on child health among policy-makers and shapers in Westminster. We're the Royal College for both Paediatrics and Child Health, and as such, our advocacy extends to working to influence those with power to do so to enact policies that will improve child health outcomes in the UK.

We engage regularly with Ministers, senior civil servants, MPs, Lords and advisers on a wide range of matters. We do this unilaterally, through the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) and several campaign coalitions. We provide briefings, respond to Select Committee inquiries, attend meetings and roundtables and undertake analysis of different policies on our blog platform .Ìý

The cornerstone of all our influencing work is  - data across nearly 30 indicators that forms the evidence base for policy recommendations. As part of this project, we identified 3 key priorities for Government to drive improvements to child health outcomes:

  • Reduce health inequalities
  • Prioritise public health, prevention and early intervention
  • Build and strengthen local, cross-sector services to reflect local need.

These priorities are the thread through all of our public affairs work to ensure decision-makers understand who we are, what we do and what our members need from public policy to allow them to do their jobs.Ìý

RCPCH is a charitable organisation and as such, are bound by both the and the to operate in a politically neutral manner. We never endorse political parties or movements, and work with representatives of all parties equally.
