Child sexual assault and the forensic examination (Level 3+) – London

This two day in-person course is designed to equip paediatricians with both the technical and forensic skills to obtain high quality samples, and the knowledge and understanding of the physical, emotional and procedural considerations of managing children who have experienced suspected sexual assault.

The course consists of expert led lectures and workshops, followed by a series of observed practical sessions on Day 2. Alongside this, you will have access to a selection of recorded lectures on key topic areas for viewing as part of your pre-course activities (approximately 4 hours in duration).

You must attend both course days.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Recognise and accurately describe findings associated with child sexual assault 
  • Take high quality forensic samples from children and young people that can be used in police investigations
  • Recognise organic conditions which may be found incidentally or which may present as possible child sexual abuse and other injuries
  • Appropriately screen for STIs, risk of pregnancy and risk of Hep B and HIV, and initiate appropriate treatment
  • Write high-quality evidence-based statements

Target audience 

Consultant paediatricians and experienced doctors currently working with children who have experienced suspected sexual assault OR intending to work to join a CSARC rota (a supporting letter from your line manager will be required in this instance)

Extremely good content and nice to meet people and colleagues face to face.

  • How many CSA examinations have you undertaken?
  • How many professional witness reports have you written?
  • How many times have you been to court?
  • When was the last time you have seen a patient for a CSA examination?

Please include your job role - if you are not currently actively working in this areas but intending to join a CSARC rota, please also include the supporting letter from your line manager.

I need to get involved with CSA examinations in the future, but this course has given me a good grounding and confidence to begin doing this.
