RCPCH and equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) - Member and volunteer data 2020-22

In our first 'Working for change'' report in 2021 we committed to annually reporting on EDI data held for our members and staff, along with aggregated disclosure rates relating to protected characteristics. We collated data from 2020, 2021 and 2022 on this page (including records up to January 2023).

2024 data

In May 2024, we published the 2024 data separately as a distinct increase in response rates makes year-on-year comparison challenging.

The importance of data

The collection, analysis and sharing of demographic data continues to be a key priority for the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) strategy within the College. Up to January 2023 we hold 1,957 completed member diversity monitoring form responses, which only equates to around 9% of our total membership.

Demographic data provides important insights into the representation of our members and assists us in implementing initiatives that target inclusivity and improve the working lives of paediatricians. We urge all members to complete their diversity monitoring forms in full, so we have a better understanding of member representation.

As of November 2023, all users are prompted to complete their diversity profile when they first log in to their RCPCH account.

Demographic data on members, volunteers and senior volunteers

The following tables and graphs illustrate the protected characteristics of our members, volunteersÌýand senior volunteers to assess representation within these groups. This data is held by the College, accessed for this analysis in January 2023.

Due to data protection and risk of identifying individuals, we have not shared full data where fewer than five individuals have responded in any particular category.Ìý

Volunteers in this data refers to those individuals identified on our internal membership record system (CARE) as being members of a committee, acting as an examiner or being an assessor or a question writer.

Disability

Our questions to members about disability haveÌýchanged to reflect best practice. Therefore a straightforward comparison between years cannot be made.Ìý

In 2020 our question about disability asked members to state if they had a learning disability or difficulty, longstanding illness, mental health condition, other, physical impairment, or sensory impairment. If a member disclosed having any of these conditions, we have included them in the disability total in the disclosure rates for 2020.Ìý

From 2021, our question asks members to state if they have any physical or mental health conditions or illnesses lasting or expected to last for 12 months or more (Such as dyslexia, diabetes, arthritis, a heart condition, or a mental health condition). If a member answered yes to this question, we have included them in the disclosure rates for 2021 and 2022.
