The importance of data
The collection, analysis and sharing of demographic data continues to be a key priority for the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) strategy within the College.
Demographic data provides important insights into the representation of our members and assists us in implementing initiatives that target inclusivity and improve the working lives of paediatricians.Ìý
Demographic data on members, volunteers and senior volunteers
The following graphs illustrate the protected characteristics of our members, volunteers and senior volunteers to assess representation within these groups. This data is held by the College and was accessed for this analysis in March 2024. The wording of each question has been provided alongside the graphs.Ìý
When we last published this data in March 2023, we had full diversity profile of around 9% of our membership.ÌýIn November 2023, RCPCH members were prompted to complete the diversity monitoring form before they could log into their RCPCH account. As a result of this change we now have a full diversity profile of around 68% of our membership.Ìý
Response rate per characteristic:
In previous years we have made comparisons between the data collected in different years however, because of the stark change in response rate we have decided to present this year’s data alone.Ìý
Due to data protection and risk of identifying individuals, we have not shared full data where fewer than five individuals have responded in any particular category. In these cases the bars on the charts below don't reach 100%. In other cases the bars on the charts below appear to go above 100% which is due to rounding percentages to the nearest whole number.Ìý
Volunteers refers to those individuals identified on our internal membership record system (CARE) as being members of a committee, acting as an examiner or being an assessor or a question writer.ÌýThis data does not include RCPCH &Us volunteers. The volunteer group is made up of almost 4,000 individuals.Ìý
Senior volunteer group refers to RCPCH College Officers and is made up of around 50 individuals.Ìý

The data
- Age
-
This chart shows the age, by bracket, of members, volunteers and senior volunteers. This is calculated using Date of Birth data provided when people join as a member.Ìý
Some data on senior volunteers has been removed due to small numbers.
- Caring responsibilities
-
These charts show the percentage of members, volunteers and senior volunteers that have adult or child caring responsibilities. Percentages were calculated using the total number of responsesÌýto the question.Ìý

Question: Do you have any physical or mental health conditions or illnesses lasting or expected to last for 12 months or more? (Such as dyslexia, diabetes, arthritis, a heart condition, or a mental health condition)

- Ethnicity
-
This chart shows ethnic diversity as a percentage of members, volunteers and senior volunteers. Percentages were calculated using the total number of responsesÌýto the question.Ìý
To ensure anonymity, some senior volunteer data has been removed because of small numbers.Ìý
The current ethnicity question on the diversity monitoring form is reflective of the 2021 UK census.
Question: What is your ethnic group: choose the option that best describes your ethnic group or background.
This table shows responses to a question on ethnic group or background for members, volunteers and senior volunteers. Due to data protection and risk of identifying individuals, an asterisk has been used when there were fewer than five responses for a particular ethnicity.Ìý
- Gender

Question: What is your gender?
- Members who identify as transgender

Demographic data on RCPCH staff
This data is collected by our People and Culture Division from data snapshots taken in March 2024 and March 2023 and shared anonymously with the EDI team for the purposes of reporting.
Due to data protection and risk of identifying individuals, we have not shared full data where fewer than five individuals have responded in any particular category.
There are some differences in the language used and options available for our internal diversity monitoring and our external monitoring.
