National Paediatric Diabetes Audit (NPDA) - data submission

We are now accepting data for the 2024-25 audit year. You can submit data throughout the year on our online data capture system. We are also moving towards quarterly data submission periods, and the deadlines are on this page. We also provide the dataset, templates for submitting data via both CSV and questionnaire, and our full user guide.

The following information is about the NPDA core audit.

Which centres are eligible to participate in the NPDA?

All paediatric diabetes units in England, Wales and Jersey.

However, children and young people are not eligible for the NPDA if they:

  • Are receiving care from non-NHS organisations (England, Wales and Jersey)
  • Have a diagnosis of gestational diabetes

How to submit your unit's data

We recommend that units start to enter or upload their data on at least a quarterly basis to prepare for the quarterly reporting that is coming in the near future.

The dataset has not changed - it's in the Downloads section below.

If you are unsure about any particular items, please review the dataset notes or get in touch with us at npda@rcpch.ac.uk.

National Data Opt Out

The NPDA has been exempted from the National Data Opt Out. Unless a patient specifically requests to opt out of the audit, you should enter their data.

Submission periods

Data can be added continuously throughout each audit year. Units will typically have up to two months following the end of each audit year to finalise their submissions for that year. Please see the table below for full details of our audit years and data submission periods:

Audit year Year start Year end Final date for data submission
2023-24 1 April 2023 31 March 2024 24 May 2024 (now closed)
2024-25 1 April 2024 31 March 2025 18 April 2025

The NPDA is moving towards quarterly data submission - see deadlines for this year:

Quarter Date range Deadline to submit
Q1 01 April 2024 - 30 June 2024 05 July 2024
Q2 01 July 2024 - 30 September 2024 07 October 2024
Q3 01 October 2024 - 31 December 2024 15 January 2024
Q4 01 January 2025 - 31 March 2025 25 April 2025

We ask that units submit data from all patient visits during the audit year. Data relating to all children and young people with all types of diabetes under the care of a paediatrician within a paediatric diabetes unit should be included. Summary results are presented within the data completeness report (DCR) generated upon each submission.

For data submission, you will need to use our online data capture system. If you used this last year, you can use the same login details. If you have forgotten your password, you can reset this on the login page. Please see below for a list of downloadable submission resources and user guides.

Submission resources

We now have our "How to" webinar available on core audit data submission:

The latest user guides and troubleshooting tips for our online data capture system can also be downloaded below.

Also available is the core NPDA dataset collected since 1 April 2021 and corresponding CSV submission template; this replaces the dataset in use since 2017. The dataset has been revised in line with guidance associated with achievement of NHS Information Standard status. The majority of data items remain unchanged but there is one new item and some items have been renamed, or modifications made to their response options.
